Voluntary forms of service

In addition to compulsory military service, Lithuania offers various opportunities for voluntary service. This allows citizens to contribute to national defence while combining it with other commitments or choosing the military as a professional career path.

Voluntary part-time military service is a flexible form of service that enables citizens to serve in the Lithuanian Armed Forces while studying or working. Volunteer soldiers regularly participate in weekend training and annual longer camps. The service is carried out in the National Defence Volunteer Forces and provides an opportunity to gain military skills while maintaining ties to civilian life.

Professional military service is a permanent career in the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Soldiers are employed and become part of the Armed Forces personnel. Professional service includes a variety of duties on land, in the air, at sea, and in specialised units. During professional military service, soldiers receive a salary, social guarantees, and participate in national and international missions, thus building their career. 

Studies at the Military Academy. Citizens who choose to study at the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania obtain both higher education and military training. During their studies, future officers combine academic programmes with military training, and upon graduation receive an officer’s rank and become professional service members. 

Another form of service is service in military commandant’s offices, designed for preparation in case of mobilisation or martial law. These offices are responsible for maintaining public order, protecting strategic objects, and performing other tasks under emergency conditions. 

important All voluntary forms of service are not compulsory. However, they provide citizens with an opportunity to actively contribute to the defence of the State and acquire military skills.
